Forex session times today
Each session follows the business hours of its city, so its UTC time moves by one hour when that city changes its clocks. The UTC column is for today.
| Session | Local hours | UTC today | Most active pairs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 08:00–17:00 | 21:00–06:00 | AUD/USD, NZD/USD, AUD/JPY |
| Tokyo | 09:00–18:00 | 00:00–09:00 | USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, AUD/JPY |
| London | 08:00–17:00 | 07:00–16:00 | EUR/USD, GBP/USD, EUR/GBP, USD/CHF |
| New York | 08:00–17:00 | 12:00–21:00 | EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/CAD, USD/JPY |
When is the forex market open?
Forex trades 24 hours a day, five days a week. The week starts when Sydney opens on Monday morning, which is Sunday evening in Europe and the Americas (around 21:00–22:00 UTC), and ends when New York closes on Friday afternoon. Over the weekend banks are shut and most brokers stop quoting.
The overlaps with the most volume
Liquidity is highest when two big centers are open at the same time. London and New York overlap from about 12:00 to 16:00 UTC, the busiest four hours of the day for EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD pairs. Tokyo and London overlap briefly around 07:00–09:00 UTC, and Sydney and Tokyo share the Asian morning.
The best time to trade forex
Trade the session that matches your pairs. JPY and AUD pairs move most in the Asian session, EUR and GBP pairs during London, and USD and CAD pairs during New York. Spreads are tightest and moves largest in the overlaps. The quietest stretch is between the New York close and the Tokyo open.
Daylight saving time
The UK and Europe, the US and Australia change their clocks on different dates, and Japan does not change at all. For a few weeks each spring and autumn the gaps between sessions shift by an hour. This clock uses each city's real time zone, so the hours are always right without manual adjustments.
Rollover and quiet hours
Around the New York close (about 21:00–22:00 UTC) brokers roll positions to the next day and liquidity is thin. Spreads often widen sharply for a few minutes, so many traders avoid opening new positions then. Bank holidays in a major center also make its session quieter than usual.
Frequently asked questions
Is the forex market open now?
The live clock at the top of this page shows whether the market is open and which sessions are trading right now, in your own time zone. Forex is open from Sunday evening to Friday evening (UTC) and closed on Saturday.
What time does the forex market open on Sunday?
Trading resumes when Sydney opens on Monday morning local time. That is about 21:00 UTC on Sunday when Sydney is on daylight saving time (northern winter) and 22:00 UTC otherwise. Your broker's server time may differ.
What are the four forex trading sessions?
Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York. Sydney and Tokyo make up the Asian session, London the European session and New York the North American session.
Which forex session is the most volatile?
The London session carries the largest share of daily volume, and the London–New York overlap is usually the most volatile part of the day. The Asian session is generally calmer outside JPY, AUD and NZD pairs.
Does daylight saving time change forex market hours?
Yes. Sessions keep their local hours, so their UTC times move by an hour when a city changes its clocks. This clock adjusts automatically using each city's time zone.
Why are my broker's MT4 or MT5 times different?
MetaTrader shows your broker's server time, often GMT+2 or GMT+3 so that a trading day closes at the New York close. Session times here are shown in your own time zone instead.
